It's disappointing that further gender options cannot be added due to the legal sex/gender binary. 'Not specified' is not good enough - we would like colleagues who are non-binary and transgender to feel welcomed, but these gender fields are so restrictive that we have to force them into a specific gender, which they do not identify with. It doesn’t seem necessary to follow the legal sphere in this case.
I would like more categories to be added (e.g. non-binary, transgender female, transgender male).
Describe the Challenge | More fields added to 'gender' in personal |
There should be 2 separate fields, one for legal sex as displayed on passport/ID. This is for HMRC and other required gender reporting.
We need a preferred pronoun field which allows a wide range of options including allowing employees to add to the list and self-identify.
We've recently had a candidate for interview inform us that she's currently transitioning and her name has not yet been changed legally. This presents a problem because we couldn't set her up on PeopleHR with her legal name. Others would be able to see her legal name within Workspace if we did this which would cause her distress. Therefore, if we do end up hiring here we couldn't make reference to her legal name on PeopleHR because it's visible. We couldn't even put it in brackets. Yet she'd need to be under her legal name for Payroll.
Please could you also make the Known As name field the one which is visible to managers and other employees?
Obviously we need to maintain records of legal name and legal sex, but misnaming (dead naming) and mis gendering causes a great deal of distress for trans people and we can't allow that to happen.
My view is that any development should be based on government requirements re gender reporting. There is potential to end up with a very long list and there is potential to still miss out on a new category. The first question to answer is, what is the analysis needed for? That will inform the number of categories needed. Perhaps Male / Female / Prefer not to specify and then the ability to self identify that the employee can complete.
These fields should be open for the employee to complete rather than this being an HR function
Absolutely agree, but there should also be a 'prefer not to say' option and a self-describe option. Even better, leave the choices up to the company and gives us customisable gender fields.
