Employees inputting their own Sickness Absence

We've been asked to investigate the possibility of allowing employees the ability to input their own sickness absence. The reason for this is so that their 'Reports To' and 'Additional Reports To' will receive an email notification for approval, in the same way they would receive an 'Other Event' or 'Holiday' request.
